Scott V. Nystrom, Ph.D. is editor of the Self Directed Investor web site. He is also Editor of the Gold Stock Strategist newsletter. Dr. Nystrom spent 25 years pouring over economic and financial data, crunching numbers, writing economic policy briefs, and authoring complex studies while working at the White House Office of Management and Budget, the U.S. Congress, academia, and the private sector. He has taught microeconomics, financial analysis, and health economics courses at graduate business schools and to senior Congressional staff. In addition, Dr. Nystrom has testified before Congress on the unintended economic effects of government action.

Over the past 20 years and as a self directed investor, he has applied his extensive skills to his personal investments with great success. Seeking Alpha Certified

Dr. Nystrom advocates and uses a top-down/bottom up, sector rotation investment approach. This method involves identifying: (1) global economic and financial trends-the "top down," (2) "in-cycle" high growth sectors, (3) undervalued companies in the in-cycle sector based on fundamental analysis-the "bottom up." As high growth sectors rotate, he moves assets into the latest favored sector. Dr. Nystrom explains, "My investment approach is like surfing. You need to get on the wave while it is building and move off the wave before it crests."

Another broad theme in his investment approach is to focus on dividend paying stocks. As an experienced income investor, Scott believes, "You can't restate a dividend. Dividends can provide ballast during market corrections."

Understanding global financial markets, economic trends, resource economics, international trade, global aging, and the political dynamics of economic policy are a passion for Dr. Nystrom. He has access to and understands how the top minds in the economic, political, financial, and investment world think. Moreover, Scott is a prolific student of investing and a highly respected member of a social media investment web site called ValueForum (www.valueforum.com) with over 1,000 high net worth investors and money managers who debate the merits of stocks as well as global economic and financial trends.

As an educator, Dr. Nystrom is highly motivated to teach investors, share investment ideas, and promote financial literacy across the generations.
