Elvis Has Left the Building, Again

Mon, Feb 13, 11:21 AM ET, by Bob McTeer

Last Saturday night at the Grapevine Opry, I saw the last performance of the best Elvis I've ever seen, not having seen the original in the flesh. But, having seen the original's 1968 Comeback Special many times, and having heard its sound track on an airplane's system between Soule and Toyko, and having been to Graceland three times, and having listen to his music for more decades than that, I'm here to tell you that there is little to no difference. Nathan Belt, more than all the others, has Elvis's voice, moves, looks and charisma.

That was only my second time at the Grapevine Opry. The first was about two years ago for the same performance. Word had gotten around. This was Nathan's last performance as Elvis because he is going to give Nashville a shot, not as Elvis, but as himself. A requirement is that he lose the Elvis look, including a haircut. Such a shame. Such a shame. I can't imagine that what the world gains if Nathan makes it as Nathan would match what it's losing.

This is supposed to be an economics blog, but I am loosely supervised and take a liberty every now and then. If I must make an economics connection, it would be to Joseph Schumpeter's creative destruction. You have to let the old go to make room for the new. But I think Schumpeter assumed that the new would be new and improved. In any case, the churn goes on.

Another thought that came to me involved the haircut and how the haircut Delilah gave Sampson didn't turn out well for him. I really hope this shearing turns out better.

I'm headed for Las Vegas today. My favorite show there is the Legends show. They always include Elvis in their line-up. Why couldn't Nathan have become a Las Vegas Elvis rather than a Nashville whatever?

Don't be cruel to a heart that's true.
